Flemish/Renaissance/Medieval portrait obsessive and collector of skulls, junk, kooky toys, sleazy pulp novels and dolls from the 60's and 70's, living in Cardiff [UK] with my partner Paul and our cats Lupa and Tog. I mainly work in oils on wood and also do digital portraiture using a tablet.

Vanity Fair magazine, founded in 1868 by Thomas Gibson Bowles, featured caricatures of well-known personalities of the Victorian and Edwardian period. Although there were numerous artists who contributed to the publication, these Vanity Fair portraits, or caricatures, are collectively known as ‘SPY’ cartoons. Named after the pseudonym (or nom de crayon) of their most influential artist, Leslie Ward, they are an apt name as Ward would study his ‘victims’ for many hours prior to beginning his preliminary sketches. Secret Sitters

I’ve long admired eye miniatures from the 18th Century. These ‘Lover’s Eye’ miniatures were often made into brooches, pendants or rings and given as love tokens. They ooze mystery and intrigue, tantalising the viewer into guessing the identity of the secret lover, although many miniatures were probably simply a form of sentimental or mourning jewelry.
